Do we have any RPG players here?

Recently I’ve been playing more and more RPG sessions thanks to my husband who’s a total freak, managing couple of campaigns at the same time. I’m not that crazy but I do play some different systems - DnD, Fabula Ultima, Monster of the Week and recently our newest discovery - The Zone.

It’s quite an interesting combination of roleplaying and improvising but since the game itself helps a lot with coming up with different ideas I think it’s a good recommendation for board gamers as well.

The idea is that you create characters based on the randomly selected archetypes and come up with a reason why these characters want to get into The Zone. What is The Zone? That’s also your task to invent it together with other players. The rest of the game is divided into scenes in which you’re going to describe what you’re doing, what happens and what goes wrong and how it influences you - trauma like or physically by mutating you. Also your call.

The Zone is a play-to-lose adventure meaning that in the end only one of you survives. If! Because it’s also not that obvious. It gives you all the free will to do about it whatever you like. At some point every scene means one death and the character who’s next to go is also determined randomly but if you feel you would like to sacrifice so someone else can go on? Go ahead!

In the box there are cards needed to play. Everytime you determine the action you pick a card telling you if you succeed but there is always a ‘but’ or ‘and’ - yes you climbed that wall but…? Something happened making things worse - what is it? Figure it out.

At some point of my RPG adventure I thought DnD is the ultimate way to play but it always depends what you need and discovering new fun systems is so much fun. I believe that if you’re creative and have a thing for storytelling you should try out The Zone even if you’ve never played any RPGs before.
