🧠 Are so called “non-active” learning methods really that passive?
We often label activities like listening, reading, or watching as non-active. Supposedly, they require little to no effort. But that’s far from the truth.
➡️ Try really listening to a lecture or deeply reading a piece of text. It demands cognitive effort — attention, processing, focus. And honestly, it’s quite easy to drift off and start thinking about something else entirely.
🎯 The key? It’s all about the learner’s decision to engage.
Sometimes, it’s even easier to immerse people in games or discussions than to motivate them to read a text content.
🙋♀️ So, does that mean passive methods are inferior?
Not at all. 📚🎧🎬
In some contexts, an e-book, a video, or a lecture might be the best possible choice.
During one of our workshops, a case study was presented in which an interactive video was proposed for product training. In it, learners took on the role of a detective solving a criminal mystery — one that required knowledge of the company’s products.
A few days later, the L&D team received a request:
"Can we get a simple, searchable product overview? Even a PDF would do."
Isn’t it possible that, sometimes, learning designers' ambitions overshadow common sense — and the real needs of learners?
💡 The real question isn’t what method you use, but whether the learner sees the value behind learning.
💥 What drives engagement in non-active formats?
✔️ WIIFM – What’s In It For Me?
✔️ A compelling narrative or visual style
✔️ A thought-provoking question at the start
✔️ Simplicity - clear and simple messaging
📈 Still not convinced?
Think about how many people willingly share their email just to download an e-book. Why? Because they believe it’s worth it.
📌 A tip for learning designers:
Don’t give up on so-called passive formats.
✅ Use them strategically.
✅ Design for engagement — sometimes even more carefully than with active methods.
