Ultraviolet light can harm corals in shallow water. If the reduction of the Earth's protective ozone layer allows more ultraviolet radiation to reach the earth, corals may disappear from such a habitat as shallow water.

Because of their solid structure, brain corals can live in ocean currents and strong waves.
