I adore vintage Ladybird books and collect them for special occasions, subjects I love, or — in this case — the four seasons.

But I gave myself a rule: no buying online. If I wanted the missing one, I had to stumble across it in the real world, tucked away in some dusty corner of a bookshop.

After two years of searching, I’m fairly sure every old bookseller in Edinburgh knew what I was hunting for.
