The Great Green Wall Across China's Deserts May Be Absorbing Carbon Faster Than Expected, New Study Finds.
For nearly five decades, China has planted around 66 billion trees across the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts as part of its ambitious Great Green Wall project. Designed to slow desert expansion, the initiative has already increased forest cover in affected regions from 5% in 1978 to 14% in 2023, helping reduce dust storms and improve air quality.
Now, a new study suggests these planted forests may be growing up to 66% faster than natural forests, potentially benefiting more from rising atmospheric CO₂ levels. Researchers believe younger trees and active human management contribute to this rapid growth, although the exact reasons remain under investigation.
Scientists caution that while planted forests can provide a strong short-term boost in carbon capture, natural forests remain essential for long-term carbon storage, biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience. The findings offer new insights into how large-scale reforestation projects could shape future climate strategies.

James Webb Telescope Reveals Rare Salt Clouds on the Mysterious Pink Planet GJ 504 b Located 57 Light-Years Away.
Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have discovered evidence of unusual salt clouds surrounding GJ 504 b, the famous "Pink Planet" located about 57 light-years from Earth. The giant world, first discovered in 2013, is among the coldest directly imaged planetary companions ever found.
Researchers detected an atmosphere rich in water v***r, methane, carbon dioxide, and ammonia, but atmospheric models only matched observations when salt clouds were included. This marks the first time salt clouds have been identified as a key ingredient in explaining an object's spectrum.
Scientists believe the discovery could improve our understanding of cold giant planets, including worlds similar to Jupiter, and highlights the crucial role clouds play in shaping planetary atmospheres across the galaxy.
