It all dates back to 1945 when a couple of Harvard University scientists were testing the computer Mark II Aiken Relay Calculator. In doing so, they saw a real tiny moth trapped between the contacts of the electromechanical relay, and somebody took out a pair of tweezers and grabbed the insect. It was labelled as 'bug' and was pasted in the computer's log book. Since it was the actual first case of bug being found, the word 'debugging' came from it.
Now debugging is a term used for the process of identifying bugs and redundancies that hinder the performance in the software.
