Our Ph.D. student has successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis. His research topic was QoS Provisioning in D2D enabled Future Cellular Networks. Core findings of the thesis are (among others):

1) Mode selection mechanism critically affects the achievable QoS performance of a D2D communication link; therefore, designing efficient estimators for the underlying wireless channel features has paramount importance.
2) Benefits of using overlay D2D communication over underlay D2D communication diminishes as the quality of underlying wireless channel features (used for mode selection) deteriorates.
3) If a relay device (in the case of relay-assisted D2D communication) operates under stricter QoS constraints then QoS constraints imposed at the transmitting device become irrelevant.
4) QoS performance of a D2D communication link can be enhanced by employing retransmission schemes at the cost of extra bandwidth. To this end, this thesis proposes a novel framework for truncated HARQ-enabled D2D communication, which provides a suitable tradeoff between QoS and bandwidth in different network conditions for both overlay and underlay settings.

This thesis resulted in the following journal publications:

Congratulations to our PhD Scholar Waqas Haider on securing Commonwealth Split-site Scholarship (worth 50,000 GBP). The selection rate for this highly competitive scholarship is less than 1%.

For exchange year 2019-2020, Waqas will be hosted by the Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge in the UK. His supervisor will be Prof. Jon. Crowcroft.

At ITU, Waqas’ supervisor is Dr. Adnan Noor Mian. His subject area of research is Device-to-Device Communication in Future Cellular Networks (5G and beyond).

We wish him well for his academic pursuits!

Another Achievement:
Pleased to inform that the work of our Ph.D. student Syed Waqas Haider Shah has been accepted in IEEE Wireless Communication Letters (WCL), entitled "On the Impact of Mode Selection on Effective Capacity of Device-to-Device Communication". IEEE WCL is one of the top-tier journals of the wireless communication domain with the impact factor of 3.096.

ITU IoT Lab initiates R&D work in long range IoT.

One group of lab has recently started working in LoRaWAN technology. This is a new network technology that is designed for low power devices to communicate over long distances. It can be used to send low data rate messages up to tens of km. The figure shows some of the LoRaWAN devices, readily available in market, procured by IoT lab to have real experiments with this technology.
