SURINAME
100 and 250 Guilden
The 100 and 250 Guilden banknotes from Suriname’s 1986–1988 series were issued by the Central Bank of Suriname and printed by Thomas De La Rue & Company Limited. Both notes share the same design and layout, differing only in color and denomination. They are printed in Latin script and feature fine multicolor underprints with detailed engraving.
Obverse (Front):
The front side of both notes shows a portrait of Anton de Kom (1898–1945), a Surinamese writer, anti-colonial activist, and national hero known for his work “Wij Slaven van Suriname” (“We Slaves of Suriname”). His inclusion reflects Suriname’s struggle for justice and independence.
To the right of his portrait, there is an image of militia figures, symbolizing defense and unity. Along the bottom, a row of buildings represents the colonial architecture of Paramaribo, the capital city. The note’s text includes:
“CENTRALE BANK VAN SURINAME,” the denomination (either HONDERD GULDEN or TWEE HONDERD VIJFTIG GULDEN), and the date of issue (1986 for the 100 Guilden, 1988 for the 250 Guilden).
Reverse (Back):
The reverse design features a toucan bird on the left side, representing Suriname’s tropical biodiversity. On the right, a speaker addressing a crowd symbolizes the voice of the people and the nation’s social awareness. The background includes artistic patterns reflecting Surinamese culture and nature.
Color and Features:
• 100 Guilden: Dominant color is purple.
• 250 Guilden: Dominant color is blue-gray.
Both notes include a watermark, security thread, and fine microtext for authenticity.
Overall, the 1986–1988 Suriname 100 and 250 Guilden notes combine political symbolism, national pride, and detailed artistry. Their shared design honoring Anton de Kom makes them significant pieces of Suriname’s historical and numismatic heritage.
