Parenting a teenager can feel a lot like living with a cat—unpredictable, independent, and often allergic to affection.

One minute, they’re glued to their phone; the next, they’re locked in their room insisting they’re “fine.”

In an article published by Smart Parenting, Dr. Michele Alignay, a parenting expert, explained that adolescence is when kids start exploring their identity beyond the family.

It’s normal for them to crave privacy, push boundaries, and assert independence.

Their behavior isn’t rebellion—it’s development. With their prefrontal cortex still maturing, teens struggle with decision-making, impulse control, and emotional regulation.

So what can parents do? Practice “cat parenting.”

Give them space but stay within reach. Don’t chase—just be present, calm, and open. Let them come to you on their own terms.

The key is balance: respect their independence while offering stability and unconditional love.

Because even if they act distant, teens—like cats—always return to where they feel safe.
