Discover Ghilam Harsh: Pakistan’s Hidden Rainbow Mountain
Tucked high in the Qorqulti Yasin Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan, at 4,300 meters, lies a geological marvel few have witnessed: Ghilam Harsh, the local name for Pakistan’s stunning Rainbow Mountain. Far from the crowds, accessing this natural wonder is an adventure in itself. Journey by jeep 15km from Yasin to Tashi, then trek 6km through breathtaking landscapes to the Makuli Meadows. From Makuli, a challenging 2km hike ascends to the mountain’s vibrant slopes.
The reward? A surreal canvas of blazing stripes – deep reds, vivid yellows, electric greens, and rich purples – painted across the mountain face by mineral deposits over millennia. The best window to witness this spectacle is between July 10th and late August, when weather is most favorable and the high passes are accessible.
Visit Responsibly: This fragile, sacred landscape demands respect. Acclimatize properly to the altitude. Hire local guides from Tashi or Yasin, their knowledge is invaluable. Dress modestly, seek permission before taking photos of people, and pack out all waste. Leave only footprints and take only memories of this extraordinary, hidden wonder.
