Data from NIA Region 1 showed that 136,341 hectares are currently covered by irrigation systems in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan. Pangasinan posted the largest irrigated area at 78,564.58 hectares, followed by Ilocos Norte with 28,236.10 hectares, Ilocos Sur with 18,226.10 hectares and La Union with 11,314 hectares.

NIA Regional Manager Engr. Geffrey Catulin said the accomplishment represents 53.44 percent of the regionโ€™s total irrigation potential of 255,127.82 hectares. He noted that while significant progress has been made, the agency continues to work toward expanding irrigation services to thousands of additional hectares of agricultural land across the region.

The official said sustained government investments in irrigation infrastructure, including the rehabilitation, upgrading and modernization of existing facilities, have improved water delivery and expanded coverage to farming communities. The irrigated areas are served by national and communal irrigation systems that support rice production and other agricultural activities.

Catulin emphasized that reliable irrigation has become increasingly important as farmers face climate-related risks, including prolonged dry spells and erratic rainfall. He said expanding irrigation coverage remains a key strategy in increasing farm productivity, boosting rural incomes and ensuring a stable food supply in one of Northern Luzonโ€™s major agricultural regions.
