📍 Take note that the problem was given yesterday, January 12 2024.
In order to look for 1989 days ago yesterday, we simply just need to work backwards knowing the current day, number of days in a year (and leap years), and number of days every month.
This problem could be solved in multiple ways, and this is just a provided sample solution.
Starting with January 12, 2024, subtract 12 days to 1989 to go back at the date of December 31, 2023.
1989 – 12 = 1977
Imagine that after subtracting 12 days, we went back to date December 31, 2023 and need to look for the date 1977 days ago. The year 2023, 2022, and 2021 are ordinary years with 365 days, thus we are to subtract 3 years from 1977 days to go back at the date of December 31, 2020.
1977 – 3(365)
1977 – 1095 = 882
Now, we only need 882 days to look for. At the day December 31, 2020, the year 2020 is a leap year. In order to go back at the date of December 31, 2019, we need to subtract 366 days from the remaining 882 days.
882 – 366 = 516
On December 31, 2019, the year 2019 is a regular year with 365 days.
516 – 365 = 151
Now, it is currently December 31, 2018 and our remaining 151 days is less than a year. The only thing to do is to go back considering the days of the months.
151 – 31 days of December = 120 [November 30, 2018]
120 – 30 days of November = 90 [October 31, 2018]
90 – 31 days of October = 59 [September 30, 2018]
59 – 30 days of September = 29 [August 31, 2018]
It is currently August 31, 2018, and going back 29 days from now means 29 days subtracted from 31 days is 2. Therefore, the answer is August 2, 2018.
