There is a growing link between neurodivergence and substance use.
One contributing factor is masking, the act of hiding oneโs natural behaviors to fit into social expectations (Sizoo et al., 2017; Kronenberg et al., 2015). This can stem from difficulties in social interaction, leading to isolation, loneliness, and pressure to conform.
Substance use may become a way to cope, by lowering inhibitions, easing social discomfort, or increasing confidence in group settings.
These behaviors are not simply choices, but responses to challenges in navigating a world built around neurotypical expectations.
Understanding these experiences is key to building more inclusive and supportive environments. ๐
