DID YOU KNOW? | The Philippine Flag was first unfurled on May 28, 1898 after the Philippine Revolutionary Army’s victory against the Spanish forces in Cavite.

After the Philippine Revolutionary Army’s victory against the Spanish forces during the Battle of Alapan in Imus, Cavite, Gen. Aguinaldo first unfurled the Philippine flag on May 28, 1898 in Cavite while cheering for independence. Fifteen days later, he formally presented the same flag in Kawit, Cavite and declared the Philippine’s independence from the Spanish forces.

The original flag design contains symbolic elements. The white triangle represents liberty and equality; the color blue symbolizes peace, justice, and truth; and the color red symbolizes bravery, courage, and patriotism. The three stars represent the three major island of the Philippines - Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao; while the yellow sun symbolizes freedom, unity, democracy, and sovereignty. The eight rays of the sun are in honor of the eight provinces; Nueva Ecija, Manila, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, and Bataan; the first eight provinces started the revolt against the Spaniards colonization to the Philippines.

On March 6, 1965, the Presidential Proclamation No. 374 was issued declaring May 28 as the National Flag Day. According to Executive Order No. 179, the flag is to be permanently displayed by all government offices, businesses, educational institutions and private residences from May 28 to June 12 in celebration of the event. #
