Ang The Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur katuwang ang DOST 1 - Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. 1 at ang Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS-DOST), ay magsasagawa ng REDAS Training on Exposure Data Collection and Processing Using Remotely Piloted Aircraft (Drone Operation) bilang bahagi ng mga inisyatiba para sa National Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM) 2026.

Layunin ng training na ito na palakasin ang kakayahan ng mga kalahok mula sa ibat ibang Local Government Units ng Ilocos Sur-Local Disaster Risk Reduction Office sa paggamit ng drone technology para sa pangangalap at pagproseso ng exposure data, na mahalaga sa mas epektibong disaster risk assessment, preparedness, at pagpapalakas ng disaster resilience ng mga komunidad.

July 6, 2026 – The Department of Science and Technology Ilocos Region (DOST Ilocos Region) hosted the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Cluster Kick-Off Activity in observance of the 2026 National Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM) at the DOST Ilocos Regional Office in Brgy. Catbangen, City of San Fernando, La Union.

The activity brought together member agencies of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council I (RDRRMC I) Prevention and Mitigation Cluster to strengthen collaboration and enhance capacities in disaster prevention and mitigation through science-based disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) initiatives.

In her welcome message, Dr. Teresita A. Tabaog, Regional Director of DOST Ilocos Region and Vice Chairperson of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Region I (RDRRMC I) for Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, underscored the importance of science, technology, and innovation in building resilient communities.

"At DOST, we firmly believe that Science, Technology, and Innovation play a vital role in building resilient communities. We remain committed to developing and promoting innovative, science-based solutions that support informed decision-making and sustainable disaster resilience. This commitment embodies our mantra, 'AGHAM na Ramdam,' where science is experienced, appreciated, and translated into meaningful actions that improve the lives of our people," Dr. Tabaog said.

Representing Assistant Secretary Laurence E. Mina, Deputy Administrator for Operations of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), Mr. Kristian Tabisaura, DRRM Division Acting Chief of OCD Region I, delivered a message of support. He commended DOST Ilocos Region for leading the activity and for providing a platform that convenes RDRRMC I member agencies to strengthen coordination and enhance their capacities through a series of informative DRRM discussions.

The activity featured several technical presentations aimed at increasing participants' knowledge on disaster prevention and mitigation. Ms. Ma. Criselda Abrajano-Gonzales, OIC, Policy Development and Planning Section, Office of Civil Defense Region I provided an overview of the 2026 National Disaster Resilience Month and the Prevention and Mitigation thematic area. Engr. Louie Vergara, Weather Specialist II of DOST-PAGASA, discussed hydrometeorological hazards and the importance of weather information in disaster preparedness and risk reduction. In the afternoon session, Mr. John C. Maquiling showcased the SOLIDO DRRM Knowledge Hub, an innovative science-based platform that generated significant interest among the participants for its role in providing accessible and reliable DRRM information.

One of the major highlights of the event was the ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between DOST Ilocos Region and Department of Education (DepEd) Region I for the reproduction and distribution of 4,500 copies of the Reference for Emergency and Disaster (RED Book). The partnership aims to strengthen disaster preparedness and resilience by making reliable DRRM reference materials more accessible to schools and communities across Region I.

The activity was attended by representatives from the member agencies of the RDRRMC I Prevention and Mitigation Cluster, reaffirming their collective commitment to advancing science-based disaster risk reduction initiatives and fostering a more resilient Ilocos Region.
