I went upstairs the other night to a mess. I got frustrated and told my kids to clean up, but it was bedtime, so they went to sleep. The next day, after they left for school, I saw what the “mess” really was: Crafts. Drawings of new characters. A monster truck rally. Miniature books. A dollhouse fueled by imagination. A “floor is lava” with a shark waiting in the water. And immediately, I wanted to cry. Because what’s the alternative? A spotless house… because their heads are buried in screens? We’re a screen-conscious family. My kids still get some screen time, but it’s limited. And most of their time is filled with play, homework, sports, and imagination. Yes, I want them to learn responsibility. Yes, they should clean up. But if I nag constantly, they’ll just want to go somewhere else, or worse, turn to screens instead. Screens don’t make messes. Childhood does. One day these messes will be gone. And all that will remain are the pictures, the videos, and the memories. I want to give my kids an age-appropriate childhood. I want to give them… a childhood. Keep showing up. 29/08/2025
