SamalOutrigger branched out from the Filipino oral tradition of passing boat building skills to the next generation. I devoted time to digitize ancient sailing outrigger designs into a complete set of boat plan.

Alejandro Jubac of Bohol, Philippines built this "Bigiw Amakan" outrigger. This is an ancient design using a woven split-bamboo to extend the sides of a dug-out keel. Almaciga tree resin were used as caulking. The Bigiw hull have similarities to canoes of Anuta in Solomon islands.

Fred is progressing very well on his one meter riverboat study model for Rio Grande de Mindanao. Similar boat design are used when sailing out to sea, with a higher freeboard, canopy, and outriggers installed. The lug sails are traditionally adorned with the colours of the clan.
