A Landmark Victory for Workers in Europe and Worldwide
Yesterday, in this landmark advisory opinion supporting worker rights, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) affirmed that the right to strike is protected under international law. This is a long-awaited confirmation that the right to strike is an integral part of the freedom of association and the right to bargain collectively as defined in the ILO Convention 87, as ‘actions’ the trade unions have to defend their rights and promote social justice and social progress for millions of workers in Europe and in the world.
We welcome this landmark advisory opinion, as a significant victory and a positive signal for workers! The remarkable advisory opinion carries a most significant legal and political weight, that will strengthen the role of trade unions in all sectors and in all parts of the world. It will also set the doctrine in national and international law. The International Labour Organization is expected to consider the matter and any follow-up at its 358th session in November.

Really interesting, we learned something new today. Reflecting on this, we still need to find ways to better engage migrant workers with disabilities in collective bargaining and union organising. Workers’ rights must include everyone, across borders.
💡DID YOU KNOW: The world’s oldest surviving organization of people with disabilities is a trade union?
The National League of the Blind (NLB) was founded in the UK in 1893 and organized
organized the 1920 Blind March. Over 250 activists across the UK marched to London with signs with slogans like "justice not charity." This march contributed to the government passing the groundbreaking Blind Persons Act 1920. This Act provided state support for blind people for the first time. Today, the union is known as the National League of the Blind and Disabled and is still campaigning for the rights of workers with disabilities.
