Leadership Without Integrity Will Fail Us

The ₱200 billion shortfall in the 2026 national budget is not simply a fiscal gap—it is a moral one. While proposals are raised to reduce VAT from 12% to 10%, let us remember: the Philippines already imposes one of the highest consumption taxes in Southeast Asia.

Our middle class bears this weight daily, yet they do not receive free health care, free education, or even reliable flood control. Instead, corruption drains our coffers, leaving ordinary citizens to suffer while public officials enjoy global trips, private concerts, fine wine, and lavish dining.

The issue is not the tax rate—it is the failure of collection, the misuse of funds, and the absence of value-based leadership. From ₱601 billion in tax assessments under electronic Letters of Authority, only ₱7.95 billion was actually collected. This staggering gap reveals that before tinkering with VAT rates, we must first fix the broken system of tax audits, plug the leaks of corruption, and ensure every peso collected is spent for the people.

We will not succeed with leadership that hides behind privilege while the nation bleeds. What we need is leadership anchored on transparency, accountability, and integrity—leaders who serve with humility, not indulgence.

Only then can we restore trust in government and ensure that every Filipino feels the dignity of a nation that truly serves its people.
