Everyone, regardless of their marital status, whether they are married, divorced, or single, with or without children, and regardless of their health, should have a will. It's important because without a will, you won't be able to decide who gets your property after you pass away.
Each state has a default plan for distributing property if you die without a will, and this plan depends on factors like your marital status, whether you have children, and the presence of living parents or siblings.
Even if you don't have any living relatives, the state won't allow your property to go to a friend, charity, or non-relative. Instead, it might end up going to the state.
