Day 1: How to Choose Your First Vending Machine
Choosing the right vending machine isn’t just about picking something that looks good—it’s about making sure it actually earns money and fits your situation.
Start with location, because that drives everything. A busy office, school, gym, or hospital will each need different products and machine types. If your location has high foot traffic, you can go for a larger machine with more variety. If it’s a smaller or quieter space, a compact machine with best-selling items is usually smarter.
Next is what you’re going to sell. Drinks, snacks, or a combination? Cold drink machines tend to do really well in hot climates or gyms, while snack machines work better in offices or waiting areas. Combo machines are great if you want flexibility, but they can be more expensive upfront.
Then look at payment options. This matters more than people think. If your machine only takes coins, you’re losing sales. At minimum, go for machines that accept:
* Cash (bills and coins)
* Card payments
* Mobile payments (like tap or QR)
Convenience = more purchases.
You also want to think about reliability and maintenance. A cheaper machine might save you money upfront but cost you more in repairs and downtime. Look for something durable, easy to restock, and with available parts or support. If the machine breaks often, you’re not making money.
Another key factor is size and capacity. Bigger isn’t always better. A large machine in a low-traffic area just means products sit longer and may expire. Match the machine size to how often people will actually use it.
Finally, consider your budget and return on investment. Don’t just look at the price of the machine—think about how quickly it can pay for itself. A slightly more expensive machine with better features and payment options can generate more sales and be worth it.
If you keep it simple, it comes down to this:
👉 Right location
👉 Right products
👉 Easy payments
👉 Reliable machine
Get those right, and your vending machine has a much higher chance of actually making money instead of just sitting there.
