WHY LENT AND HOLY WEEK HAVE DIFFERENT DATES EACH YEAR

Many people wonder why Lent and Holy Week do not fall on the same dates every year. The reason is rooted in Sacred Scripture, Jewish tradition, and God’s design of time.

The dates of Lent and Holy Week depend on Easter Sunday, the greatest feast of the Catholic faith. Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. This method connects the Resurrection of Jesus with the Jewish Passover, the time when Christ suffered, died, and rose again.

Because the moon cycle changes each year, the date of Easter also changes. And since Lent begins 40 days before Easter (excluding Sundays) and Holy Week starts on Palm Sunday, their dates move as well.
