Pirates tame Red Lions as LPU breaks SBC's 11-year reign
LPU Pirates earned their 18th victory in the preliminary round in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament after a hard-fought battle against the SBC Lions that extended its second overtime, 107-105 today at the FilOil Flying V Arena, San Juan City.
The game kicked off with an intense start as the Pirates sailed to dominate the first half with the help of Mike Nzeusseu, and the Marcelino Twins who consistently placed scores in the favor of their team, giving them a ten-point lead during the period.
However, when the second half of the game began, the Lions began to claw their way through the Pirates, which was led by Donald Tankoua, Robert Bolick and Javee Mocon that provided enough points that narrowed their lead to a single point, and eventually tying with the Pirates during the 4th quarter of the game.
But during both overtime rounds, the Pirates and the Lions kept on retaliating if the other team scores a point, but Lyceum managed to sail through rough water during both overtimes as the combined effort of Nzeusseu, CJ Perez, Spencer Pretta, and Jesper Ayaay. The game ends after Nzeusseu, and Perez got the lead after successful freethrows.
This victory leads the Pirates to join the championship of the said tournament since they joined in 2011. Also, they went to the finals with an undefeated streak, a feat that was last seen done by San Beda on 2010.
