Obstruction Case vs ROBIN PADILLA OVER BATO'S ESCAPS
28/05/2026
The ICC debate is no longer just about Duterte, Bato, or partisan politics.
The deeper issue now is the balance between:
π΅π Philippine Sovereignty
βοΈ Constitutional Due Process
π International Accountability
The Philippines still has functioning courts, prosecutors, and constitutional institutions. This is why many legal analysts and constitutionalists are asking:
If our justice system is operational, should Filipino citizens be surrendered to foreign jurisdiction without fully exhausting domestic legal remedies first?
At the same time, supporters of the ICC process argue that international mechanisms exist precisely for situations where accountability involving powerful officials becomes difficult domestically.
This is why the issue has become highly divisive.
One side fears:
β’ political weaponization of international institutions
β’ erosion of sovereignty
β’ dangerous precedents against citizens
The other side fears:
β’ impunity
β’ lack of accountability
β’ selective application of justice
The real national conversation should not simply be:
βPro-Duterte or Anti-Duterte.β
The bigger question is:
How can the Philippines protect constitutional rights, preserve sovereignty, and still uphold accountability under international law?
Whatever position people take, the precedent established today may affect future governments, future opposition groups, and future Filipino citizens for generations to come.
