MY FAITH NEWS | Archbishop Villegas to ICC: Bring to justice killers of drug war victims.

Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates B. Villegas has appealed to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to hold accountable those responsible for killings linked to the Philippines’ anti-drug campaign, saying the violence not only took lives but also eroded the nation’s moral foundations.

Speaking during a homily at the EDSA Shrine commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1986 People Power Revolution, Villegas directly addressed the ICC in The Hague, urging it to act amid what he described as the failure of domestic accountability mechanisms. “Bring to justice the murderers of drug users who also murdered our national virtues and values,” the archbishop said.

Villegas said the country’s justice system remains “defective, not ideal,” and that political will to pursue accountability is weak, allowing impunity to persist. He warned that the normalization of killings during the drug war marked a betrayal of the spirit of EDSA, which he described as rooted in faith, nonviolence, and the common good.

The archbishop also recalled being threatened and mocked for speaking out against extrajudicial killings, stressing that conscience must be formed by truth rather than by populism or disinformation. He said leaders who condone murder cannot be morally legitimate and must be held to account.

Villegas concluded by urging Filipinos, especially the youth and voters, to reclaim the moral courage of EDSA through conscience-formed choices, while calling on the ICC to help restore justice and order in a country he said has strayed far from its democratic ideals.
