This photo shows the Sagrada Família around 1904, when the church was still standing in open countryside. At that time, this part of Barcelona was not fully urbanized. Fields, dirt roads, and grazing animals surrounded the site, making the building look almost isolated.
Construction had started in 1882, but progress was very slow. Only parts of the Nativity façade and a few structures were rising. Gaudí was already in charge, but he was still refining his ideas as the work advanced. The church was built without state or church funding, relying entirely on donations, which explains why construction moved in phases.
