UPV Gender and Development Program
We started in 1989 as core of women from the three UPV campuses (Iloilo, Tacloban, Cebu) who were interested in promoting the welfare of other women. The UPV Women’s Desk in 1990 was then established as an organization of women and men from the various sectors and colleges of UPV who were interested in women’s studies and women’s welfare. The UPV Gender and Development Program (GDP) became institutionalized upon the approval of the Board of Regents on April 17, 1997.

IN PHOTOS: The West Visayas State University College of Medicine, in collaboration with the UPV Gender and Development Program and the Ugsad Regional Gender Resource Network, conducted the culminating activity for the project, “No Excuse for Abuse: Capacity Building of Stakeholders in Dealing with Gender-Based Violence in the Community” on 26 May 2026 at the Little Theater, UPV Iloilo City campus.
The activity was participated in by Violence Against Women (VAW) Desk Officers, Barangay Health Workers (BHWs), and barangay officials from selected barangays in Molo, Iloilo City.
Launched in 2024, the project has implemented a series of training activities designed to equip service providers with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver gender-responsive and trauma-informed services. These initiatives aim to strengthen support mechanisms for survivors of gender-based violence and enhance the functionality of VAW desks in barangays.
