I On July 16, 1990, at 4:26 p.m., a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the northern and central parts of Luzon, claiming more than 1,200 lives, damaging infrastructure worth P10 billion, and being considered as one of the most destructive earthquakes in the Philippines.

The epicenter of this earthquake was in Rizal, Nueva Ecija, northeast of Cabanatuan City. Strong shaking was widely felt and resulted to damaged structures in Baguio City, Cabanatuan City, Dagupan City and San Fernando City. The earthquake was also felt in Metro Manila and caused damage to several buildings.

This 1990 Luzon Earthquake generated a 120-km-long surface rupture along the Digdig segment of the Philippine Fault. Other geologic impacts such as liquefaction and earthquake-induced landslides were also documented.

Let us look back and remember not only the tragedy but also the lessons we learned.
