In California, between December 2016 and January 2017, twelve people fell seriously ill after eating a dish called larb—a traditional Laotian raw or rare pork dish.
The pork came from a wild boar raised privately in Northern California.
Within days, nine were hospitalized, some suffering from acute kidney injury.
Health experts discovered the meat was contaminated with a deadly parasite called Trichinella spiralis, a worm found in pigs that causes trichinosis.
