On this day in 1983, former Senator Benigno "Simeon" Aquino Jr. was assassinated in the Manila International Airport (MIA) that was renamed as "Ninoy International Airport". The Republic Act No. 2956 was signed into law in 2004, declaring the 21st of August every year as "Ninoy Aquino Day". This day is a national non-working holiday in order for the people to acknowledge the death anniversary of former Senator Benigno "Simeon" Aquino Jr.

During his time, Aquino was known as one of the prominent journalists and politicians. Being the former Mayor of Concepcion, former Provincial Vice Governor and Provincial Governor of Tarlac were some of the government positions he held.

As a senator of the 7th Congress, Aquino was the political rival of the former President Ferdinand Marcos and he was first arrested during the declaration of Martial Law in 1972 under the Marcos Era.

After all of his endless challenges, Aquino returned to Manila three years later, but was suddenly gunned down before he set foot on Tarmac. The assassination became the key to open for more events that actually resulted to the People Power Revolution of 1986 which ended the Marcos dictatorship.

Through his wife, former President Corazon C. Aquino, his four daughters including his son, former President Benigno Simeon Aquino III, his legacy will inspire Filipinos to serve and contribute meaningfully to our country.
