🇵🇭 Sibling Terminology 🇵🇭
Sa mga traditional at malalaking pamilyang Pilipino, may sinusunod na hierarchy kung paano tinatawag ang mga nakatatandang kapatid. Interesting part? May influence ito from Chinese at Japanese culture.
For boys, ang tawag sa unang tatlong panganay ay kuya, diko, at sangko. For girls naman, ang first three eldest sisters ay ate, ditse, at sanse.
Ang kuya (eldest brother) ay galing sa Chinese word na “co” (first). Kaya mapapansin mo, may mga Chinese-Filipino surnames na nagsisimula sa “Co-” like Cojuangco or Coseteng—usually connected sa first-born lineage.
Ang ate (eldest sister) naman ay galing sa “ichi” (meaning “first” in Japanese at Hokkien).
Yung diko (second brother) at ditse (second sister) ay galing sa “di” (or variants like ni/ji depending sa dialect).
For the third child, sangko at sanse come from “sansei”, which means third in line.
Pagdating sa bunso, commonly tinatawag na bunso (gender-neutral).
Pero kung specific:
* Totoy / Toto / Itoy / Doy – para sa youngest boy
* Nene – para sa youngest girl
Fun fact: May literal meanings daw ito sa Chinese, pero hindi na siya ginagamit that way ngayon—more on terms of endearment na lang talaga sa Filipino families. ❤️
