In Greek mythology, there is a tale of a water nymph who fell in love with Apollo, the God of Sun. She adores Apollo so much that she would sit on the earth and passionately stare at the sun (Apollo). Although Apollo wasn't able to notice her, another God did and felt compassion for her and turned the water nymph into a sunflower. This myth explains why sunflowers always follow the sun, it depicts the water nymph's loyalty to the one that she truly adores.
