SSU Project MPAs staff members once again showcased their innovative competence on the international stage, bringing home two prestigious awards at the Japan Design Idea and Invention Expo 2025 (JDIE 2025) held on July 5-6, 2025, at the Bellesalle Haneda Airport Garden, Tokyo, Japan, for their groundbreaking invention, "CAGE".
The team composed of Engr. Nikko Ardel Floretes, Engr. Walvies Mc Alcos, Engr. Justin Manuel Mora, Engr. Francis Jerric Candido, Engr. Rojay Flores, Engr. Adrian Gadin, and Engr. Richard Fabriag clinched the coveted gold and Leading Innovation Award for their entry CAGE (Controlled Acoustic Generation for Enticing Mud Crabs)โthe latest version in the mud crab attracting system family, developed by the ECE Department of the College of Engineering.
It uses a newly modified sound frequency to lure mud crabs into a specially designed cage. This method helps crab farmers minimize their effort in hunting, as they simply place CAGE in the area and it handles the trapping. Unlike previous versions that used a claw mechanism, CAGE operates more efficiently and requires less manual effort.
Engr. Floretes received the award and was the only Filipino who attended the event in person, a proud representation of Filipino ingenuity on the global stage.
The inventionโs focus on mud crab aquaculture resonates with national efforts to promote sustainable fisheries and food security. Its acoustic-based approach is a novel response to challenges in traditional crab farming that aligns with emerging research on sustainable development.
The JDIE is a platform for showcasing inventive concepts and cutting-edge designs from around the world.

The destruction of marine nurseries (reefs, mangroves) shrinks fish numbers. Rising seas endanger coasts. Warmer, acidic waters hurt ocean life and diversity.
In honor of our resilient fishers, whose efforts to protect our coastal and marine resources we celebrate National Fisherfolk's Day.
We must commit to sustainable practices that protect our marine environments, ensuring the lives, livelihoods, and future of all.

Thrilled to share our latest milestone as we conduct wide-scale range testing, assessing the line-of-sight proximity from the antenna mast to the tracking node in transitโseamlessly integrated into our software system.
This test helps the team fine-tune the signal strength, coverage, and real-time data transmission between the vessel and our tracking network. Each step brings us closer to a more reliable, efficient, and impactful monitoring system for marine protection.
Exciting progress aheadโstay tuned! ๐

Committed to strengthening marine conservation and empowering coastal communities, our team recently conducted an ocular visit for the base station transceiver implementationโa crucial step toward enhancing localized vessel tracking for improved monitoring and enforcement.
In line with this, we also held a collaborative meeting at the Barangay Hall of Mombon with the punong barangays of the island's seven barangays, presided over by Hon. Lustito T. Abut, punong barangay of Mombon, alongside Hon. Joel Yazar, barangay kagawad, to ensure that the implementation aligns with the needs and concerns of the community. This initiative is not just about protecting our marine waters and preserving biodiversity but also about securing the livelihood and safety of our fisherfolk, who are at the heart of this endeavor.
Further advancing the project, we have also made significant progress in the prototype design of the sensor node, which will play a key role in vessel tracking and data collection. Additionally, the web and mobile applications for real-time monitoring and management are now almost fully accomplished, marking a major milestone toward full implementation.
With technology and community partnership, we are paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future for Sierra Island and beyondโensuring that innovation continues to drive marine conservation and coastal protection.
