The Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the Zamboanga Peninsula has launched an investigation to determine where the entanglement occurred and whether currents carried the shark into Philippine waters. Local diver Harvey Yap, who shared photos of the deceased shark, described the incident as deeply distressing, noting that he had only seen juvenile reef sharks in the area twice before in his 15 years of diving.
