🇰🇷 Sebae (세배) — A Korean Lunar New Year Tradition In South Korea
During Seollal, some families across South Korea begin the new year by performing Sebae (세배) — a formal, deep bow offered by younger family members to their elders.

Sebae is more than a greeting. It is a Confucian-influenced gesture that expresses respect, gratitude, and wishes for good fortune in the coming year. Children and younger relatives wear traditional hanbok (한복) and perform the full bow (큰절), placing their hands on the floor and lowering their forehead in a sign of sincerity and humility.

📍Today, practices vary by family. Some families no longer perform charye and choose to celebrate Seollal in different ways, such as gathering for a simple meal or traveling. In these cases, there is often no need to wear hanbok.

In return, elders offer words of blessing and often give sebaetdon (세뱃돈) — New Year’s money presented in envelopes. This exchange symbolizes encouragement, prosperity, and the passing of wisdom between generations.
While modern celebrations may vary from household to household, Sebae remains one of the most recognized and enduring customs of Seollal, reflecting Korea’s deep respect for family ties and tradition.

Annyeong haseyo !!!We would like to inform you the next batch for Korean Language Class is on September 7, 2025. Sunday class( 1pm to 4pm ) slot.Weekdays is on September 8 to 19 (1pm to 5pm slot )We have to complete 10 Sunday class, after 10 sessions, pwede pa rin po kayong umattend dahil unlimited sit in naman po tayo.
