Faith, Indigenous Wisdom, and Law Converge in Philippine Rights of Nature Webinar

The Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN) will convene its latest Rights of Nature webinar on July 1, spotlighting Philippine pathways toward ecological justice through faith-based advocacy.

The session, hosted by Dr. Michelle Maloney, features Yolly Esguerra and Fr. Edu Gariguez, and will examine community-led movements, the proposed Philippine Rights of Nature legislation, and intersections of spirituality and ecological action.

Drawing from Fr. Gariguez’s abridged work “Sacred Earth, Legal Rights: convergence of indigenous worldviews and the Philippine Rights of Nature,” the webinar emphasizes that Rights of Nature is not an imported legal concept but a contemporary articulation of Indigenous Peoples’ worldviews.

Indigenous traditions, which regard the Earth as sacred, living, and relational, challenge dominant development models centered on growth, extraction, and consumption. Instead, they call for reverence, reciprocity, and communal responsibility toward creation — values now informing the proposed Philippine framework. # (RANDY NOBLEZA)

The Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN) is going to have its most recent reiteration of Rights of Nature webinar on July 1 to explore Philippine pathways toward a Rights of Nature future through the perspective of faith-based ecological action and advocacy, with Yolly Esguerra, Fr. Edu Gariguez and hosted by Dr. Michelle Maloney. The webinar will broach on community-led movements, the proposed Philippine Rights of Nature legislation, and more.

Based on the abridged version of “Sacred Earth, Legal Rights: convergence of indigenous worldviews and the Philippine Rights of Nature” by Fr. Gariguez, the data about indigenous wisdom are culled from the sharing of the leaders of indigenous peoples’ conversation on rights of nature.

Rights of Nature is not an imported legal concept searching for local relevance. Rather, it is a contemporary legal articulation of a worldview that Indigenous Peoples have practiced for generations.

The proposed Rights of Nature framework finds its deepest cultural roots not in foreign jurisprudence alone, but in the living traditions of Indigenous communities who have long understood the Earth as sacred, living, relational, and worthy of respect beyond its utility to human beings.

Their worldview challenges the dominant model of development that measures progress primarily through economic growth, extraction, and consumption.
