The Problem:
NIKE is setting up a new store in downtown city. Its logo, "The Swoosh" is to be put up in the facade of the store. As per the contractor's design, bracing elements should be doubled in the centroid of the logo. Determine where the bracing elements should be doubled as measured from the reference axis.
Try to solve and compare with the shared solution.

What causes cracks on concretes especially slabs on grade and suspended slabs in the Philippines setting?
Slab on grade like PCC.
1. The subgrade is not well compacted. Preferably,it must have at least 95% Field Density Test.
2.The methodology to be applied should be according to the BRS and DPWH standards. Use polyethylene sheets as a medium to prevent the scape of concrete moisture due to subgrade absorption.
3. Provide construction joint and contraction joints.
4. Avoid rapid hydration of concrete by avoiding casting during extreme weather temperatures like in the summer time.
5. Water curing for 28 days by providing sand to adopt ponding is imperative if burlap is more expensive to use.
6. Avoid vibration nearby by not allowing the passage of heavy vehicles and equipment nearby the PCC.
7. Avoid premature loading. Maturedness of concrete can be determined by the laboratory results of the compression test for the concrete cylinder samples at 7,14,21 and 28 days.
8. Side forms can be removed after 24 hours but avoid disturbance of the concrete.
For Suspended Slabs:
1. Shutterings including shorings should be done properly such that there will be no instantaneous deflections that would occur during concrete casting due to the weight of the fresh concrete and live loads due to the weight of the workers, pressure due to drop of concrete, application of vibration to consolidate and spread the fresh concrete into the forms.
2. The foundation of the vertical standards of the shoring should be stable that there'll be no settlement during the complete curing process.
3. Curing by ponding is recommended especially during hot seasons lower than 32°C in lieu of the burlap sacks.
4. Curing compound helps accelerate the curing process.
5. Dismantle forms or shutters after at least 14 days. Shorings can be provided with 1m x 1m BW spacing of the vertical studs depending on the slab size to prevent further instantaneous deflections.
6. Avoid premature loading such as stocking of concrete mixers, vibrators, piling of bags of cement, CHB or bricks on the floor and any other foreign materials.
7. If microcracks occur after concrete has been cured, repair it with acceptable methodology and use special repair materials as supplied by reliable manufacturers.
8. Slabs should be free from fires.
