| March of Valor: From Bataan’s Fall to a Nation’s Rise
The sun burned relentlessly over Bataan, as if the land itself bore witness to the suffering of those who stood upon it. In 1942, the Philippines faced a time of fear and uncertainty as war spread across the country. Under the command of General Douglas MacArthur, Filipino soldiers fought bravely against the advancing Japanese forces. Outnumbered and exhausted, they stood their ground in Bataan, clinging to hope amid the chaos. But hope alone could not protect them from what came next.
UNIMAGINABLE HORROR
April 9 marks a cruel chapter in history—the fall of Bataan. On this day, Filipino soldiers were forced to surrender, leading to one of the darkest events of World War II: the Bataan Death March. Under the scorching sun, thousands of prisoners of war were pushed beyond their limits—denied food and water, forced to walk for miles with little rest. Many did not survive. Yet even in that darkness, beating like a defiant drum in every Filipino heart.
MORE THAN WEAPONS
The soldiers carried itak, espada, and other handheld blades—simple weapons that became extensions of their courage, shaped not just by steel but by the strength of the hands that held them. Many relied on improvised tools, turning the ordinary into instruments of resistance. Yet these were never the true measure of their strength. Beyond the weapons were hearts full of loyalty, bravery, and a will to fight for their country. Their courage was not just about winning battles, but about never giving up on their spirit. Valor is not the absence of fear—it is choosing to move forward even when you are afraid.
HEROES OF THE PAST
Today, April 9 is remembered as the Day of Valor or Araw ng Kagitingan, a day to honor the bravery and sacrifices of those who fought and died during World War II. It is more than just a date; it reminds us of the price of freedom and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
REMEMBERING THEIR COURAGE
Looking back on this day, we are reminded that courage is not only found in moments of victory, but in the quiet strength to endure even the harshest trials. The story of Bataan lives on—not only in history books, but in the freedom we continue to experience today. As we honor those who gave their lives, may we also carry forward their legacy through our actions, choices, and love for our country.
For in remembering their valor, we keep their legacy alive.

‘Together for Health. Stand with Science’
Observed every April 7, World Health Day is a global campaign led by the World Health Organization (WHO) that highlights critical health issues affecting communities worldwide. Commemorating the founding of WHO, this year’s theme—“Together for Health. Stand with Science” urges everyone to unite, trust evidence-based solutions, and take collective action for a healthier world.
Beyond raising awareness, it inspires global and individual action: addressing priorities such as mental health, sanitation, and disease prevention, encouraging healthier lifestyles, and highlighting inequalities that affect vulnerable populations.
Today reminds us that health is a right, not a privilege—and that Science, solidarity, and responsible choices are key to ensuring well-being for all.
