Why do they attach ribbons to military aircraft and then remove them before takeoff? Here's an example of one such ribbon often used on small aircraft like Cessnas or Pipers:
This ribbon is labeled "REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT." It's attached to a pitot tube cover, which protects the pitot tubeโa forward-facing open tube that supplies air to the airspeed indicator. Insects or other small creatures might crawl into the tube, blocking it and causing the airspeed indicator to malfunction, which could lead to serious problems. Pilots place these covers on the pitot tube while the plane is on the ground to avoid such issues. However, leaving the cover on during flight would create the same problem, so a bright streamer is added to make it more noticeable during the preflight inspection. Similar ribbons are also used on other equipment, like control locks and wheel chocksโanything that needs to be removed before flight.
