• ‘Shoes on the Danube Bank’ - memorial monument on the eastern bank of the Danube River in Budapest, and Szechenyi Bridge (“Chain Bridge”) and Buda Castle in the background.
Sad and reflection inducing landmark that represents the murder of the Jews who were lined in this area of the promenade, and forced to take off their shoes before being shot and thrown into the Danube during WWII.
“On October of 1944 Hi**er overthrew the leader of the Hungarian government, Miklos Horthy, and replaced him with Ferenc Szalasi.
Szalasi, whose ideology closely followed Hi**er’s, immediately established the Arrow Cross Party - a fascist, anti-semitic organization that brutally and publicly terrorized the Jews in Budapest by beating and killing them. Nearly 80,000 Jews were expelled from Hungary in a death march to the Austrian border and approximately 20,000 Jews were brutally shot along the banks of the Danube River.
Most of the murders along the edge of the River Danube took place around December 1944 and January 1945, when the members of the Hungarian Arrow Cross Party police ("Nyilas") took as many as 20,000 Jews from the newly established Budapest ghetto and executed them along the river bank.”

“The name is derived from the word Millpuy, which means “swallow” in the Quechua language. This name comes from a local myth which holds that the site’s dramatic rock formations and chilly waters are the actual throat of the devil. For this reason, the pools were not frequently visited by locals in the past and have remained extremely well-conserved.”
