In 1978, Italian designer Piero Gratton revolutionized AS Roma’s identity with the iconic Lupetto logo, a stylized wolf’s head that became a symbol of Roman pride. Born in Milan and a lifelong Roma fan, Gratton crafted the logo under president Gaetano Anzalone to replace the untrademarkable Capitoline Wolf. His simple, bold design, featuring a black wolf with a red eye and yellow-red borders, debuted during a 1-0 win over Juventus. Beyond the logo, Gratton shaped Roma’s visual identity, designing season tickets, kits, and merchandise, including the famous “ice lolly” strips. Though initially controversial, the Lupetto won fans’ hearts, appearing on everything from tattoos to scarves. Gratton’s work extended to other clubs and the 1980 UEFA Championship logo, but his legacy endures most with Roma. He passed away in 2020, leaving behind a timeless emblem of Romanismo that still inspires today.
