The orange patches are lichens, a natural organism formed by a symbiosis between algae and fungi, even a moss.
They are not paint, not mineral stains, and not artificial.

Lichens grow on them because:
βœ” The stones are untouched and old
βœ” The surface is porous at a microscopic level
βœ” They absorb humidity, sunlight, and minerals of the stone
βœ” The environment is clean and natural
Inca stones are perfect for lichen growth.

The orange color comes primarily from natural pigments produced by lichens, especially compounds such as carotenoids and anthraquinones. These pigments protect the organisms from intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation at high altitude.
In addition, the stone itself contains naturally occurring minerals, including iron-bearing and sulfur compounds. Under humid conditions, these minerals can slowly migrate to the stone’s surface, where they interact with lichens, fungi, and mosses. This interaction can enhance or intensify the orange coloration, although it does not create it by itself.
Together, the biological pigments and mineral interactions act like a natural sunscreen, allowing lichens to survive extreme sunlight, moisture, and temperature fluctuations over many centuries.
These pigments act like sunscreen.
