13 days until Ramadan
Fasting is an act which cannot be seen, yet if you asked the person fasting, they would say that they are hungry and tired. This is a reminder that there are people around you who are suffering from various ailments and problems on a daily basis unnoticed and that we need to be more conscious of others’ well-being despite them presenting as healthy.

This is why the Prophet (ﷺ) was known as
أَجْوَدَ النَّاسِ، وَأَجْوَدُ مَا يَكُونُ فِي رَمَضَانَ
"The Prophet (ﷺ) was the most generous of all the people and even more generous during the month of Ramadan." (Bukhari)

This translation, however, does not do justice to the true extent of the Prophet’s generosity. There are two words in Arabic for the word generosity: karam and jūd. This ḥadīth states that the Prophet (ﷺ) was ajwad al-nās, which means that he had the most jūd.

The difference between the two is that karam means showing generosity when a favor is asked of you, while a person with jūd shows generosity without even being asked.

So, when the Prophet (ﷺ) was described as ajwad al-nās, it means that he was the most generous out of anyone—because he was well known among his people for taking initiative to identify those in need of help.

This Ramadan, let proactive generosity light our way, rather than merely reactive kindness guiding us from the shadows.
