recalled when on the set of in 1999 his then 25-year-old colleague had had a sharp drop in self-esteem.

Joaquin had taken the costume test, put on his robes and armor. He would look around and wonder, "What the f**k am I doing here?" He went to and told him he wasn't in the right place and didn't know what he was going to do on that set. "I tried on those costumes and saw myself in the mirror," he said, "I'm a guy from Florida, do I have to wear that ice cream costume and say goodbye to people? I don't think that's the place for me." It took, I mean it, half a day of persuasion to convince Joaquin Phoenix to get into that f**king costume and do that performance you're all familiar with. All of that took to get over his insecurities.
