We’re smack dab in the middle of plastic-free July: https://www.plasticfreejuly.org/, a good time to stop and think about more sustainable and ecologically friendly alternatives to plastic.

Paper-based packaging is the obvious example – renewable, reuseable, recyclable.

Many paper-based products are biodegradable, so they won’t destroy our oceans and waterways and the creatures that live in them in the way plastic does.

Look for icons on your packaging that tell you if you can compost and/or recycle; most paper-based packaging can be recycled and some can be composted.

Some of our favourite consumer choices are going the paper way too – now you can feel good about eating Nestlé Smarties (https://www.nestle.co.nz/creating-shared-value/nestle-packaging) and Babybel cheeses (https://packagingeurope.com/news/all-babybel-cheese-snacks-to-be-packaged-in-paper-by-2027/13694.article)

You can make a difference too - by choosing paper-based packaging over plastic.

Last Friday night some of the B&F Group team braved the cold of Christchurch to attend the PrintNZ annual New Zealand Pride In Print Awards. It was even more special this year as our Accolade Packaging colleague Kapareira (Kapa) Hannon was a finalist in the Apprentice of the Year section.

Kapa’s father even travelled to share the evening with him, and we were proud to be there too.

Kapa didn’t take home the big award (congratulations to Travers Dobson of Leading Label, Christchurch) but we are very proud of him, and all the other finalists who are champions of the New Zealand print industry.
