Hidden beneath the towering trees in the Whakarewarewa Forest is an incredible underground world 🍄

Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of fungi, and while they may only appear for a short time, most of the organism lives hidden in the soil as a vast network of fine threads called mycelium. These networks break down fallen leaves, wood, and other organic matter, recycling nutrients and helping keep forests healthy. Without fungi, dead plant material would build up and nutrients would be recycled much more slowly 🍂

New Zealand is home to thousands of species of fungi, including an incredible variety of mushrooms, with scientists estimating that many more are still waiting to be discovered 🌏

Did you know some fungi form remarkable partnerships with trees, connecting to their roots and helping them absorb water and nutrients? In return, the trees share sugars produced through photosynthesis. This hidden relationship helps forests grow stronger and more resilient 🌱

So, the next time you spot a mushroom on the forest floor, you're looking at just a tiny glimpse of one of nature's most important ecosystems at work ✨
