Finnish student impresses Hawke's Bay ram breeder A Hawke's Bay ram breeder has had hundreds of students through his gates, but none quite like Silja Alamikkotervo.

One Stop Ram Shop has had a very satisfactory ram selling season to date. The sheep industry inNZ is in a poor economic positions. Processors who buy from farmers are unhappy with the strength of the NZ dollar. This strong dollar they blame for the low schedule of prices offered farmers. Farmers are price takers and have to accept the low offer some. Poor sale prices when added to the slow Spring growth of lambs has led to unhappy farmers NZ wide. Sales of Rams have reflected farmers confidence in OSRS genetics. Sires sold have Finn and Texel with various levels of NZ sheep breeds. The combinations have been stabilised for over two decades, so they are well established. Hence sales in other islands have held up in spite of the lousy economics. Most obvious in the sales has been a continual move by farmers to increase the level of Finn and Texel in their replacement ewe breeding flock. This is exciting because the new genetics are proving to be more reliable than traditional genetics. Almost 50 percent of the national ewe flock is in 2016 consists of crossbreed sheep.
