🎒 Just a reminder that School Holidays are just around the corner starting 4 July. Looking for some free and fun ways to keep the kids entertained around Hawke’s Bay? Here are a few great local spots to explore these holidays:

⛰️ Sugar Loaf Hill
Access is available from Cumberland Rise, with parking nearby. This prominent landmark offers spectacular views across Napier, Taradale and the Heretaunga Plains. The walk is best suited to older children and adults, with some steep inclines and steps along the way. Reach the summit at 127m above sea level, marked by the trig station, or extend your adventure to Kent Terrace via Church Road for a 5km walk (around 60 minutes).

🚴 Marine Parade Pump Track
Located opposite the Ellison Street entrance on Marine Parade beside the promenade and cycleway, the pump track is a fantastic way for kids to burn off some energy. Packed with rollers and berms, riders can learn to “pump” the terrain to build and maintain speed. Suitable for bikes, scooters and skateboards, it’s perfect for all ages and abilities.

🌲 The Redwoods – Te Mata Park
With an extensive network of walking trails catering to all ages and fitness levels, Te Mata Park is a great family destination. The Pīwakawaka Loop (1.3km – approximately 40 minutes) features an easy, mostly even surface and passes through the Little Redwoods, making it ideal for younger children. For a longer adventure, the Giant Redwoods walk (2.7km return – around 2 hours) offers a more challenging track with some muddy sections and inclines, suitable for those with moderate fitness.

🌟 Matariki is Coming 🌟

Matariki marks the beginning of the Māori New Year (Te Mātahi o te Tau). It’s a special time to remember those who have passed, celebrate the present, and look ahead to the future with whānau and friends.

If you’re looking for ways to celebrate Matariki in Hawke’s Bay, here are a couple of events we’ve found:

From 17–19 July, Napier transforms into a living celebration of the Art Deco era during Winter Deco Weekend.

The big focus this year is the Winter Deco Taste Trail, with venues across Napier serving up Deco-inspired dishes, cocktails and drinks. Be sure to check out the Navy Band in the park, the Secret Speakeasy, vintage cars, jazz bars, and all the glamour and style of the Art Deco era.

There’s truly something for everyone, making it the perfect winter outing for families, friends, and visitors alike.

Make a weekend of it and experience the magic as Napier goes back in time for one of the city’s most iconic events.
