2026 ushered in more wind than cricket in a brief encounter with Collegians 3rd XI.

1st Innings

Captain Ananth - sent in to bowl - removed opener Louis via caught behind royally (1st ball of game). Still without a run off the bat, Chengappa took care of captain Jono, whom mistimed an innocuous ball straight to the returning Mayur at short mid-wicket.

Some resistance from 1st drop Kirdan meant Jobin was unleashed and took a few overs to find his range.
Chengy worked his shape to draw the proficient Sebastian into a sliced drive to Sid at point, whom managed to grasp ahold of a sensational sliding low catch.

Jobin zeroed in with pace and precision to collect Kirdan’s off stump and the seamers day of wicket-taking was done and dusted.

Off-spinner Mayur - freshly returned home - was eager to please. First tempting a lofted drive down the ground to Indra at long off, then drifting one away to snare a stumping for the 6th wicket to elicit drinks.

Mayur was simple unstoppable: drawing a nick that was pouched beautifully by Abdul at first slip, the next ball striking off stump to be on a hatrick: which was a wicket bound bat-pad that spooned out behind square leg without a recipient.

Seamer Gaurav entered the fray and was only a bail away (bails were removed due to gusts of wind) from seaming off the 9th wicket with the ball of the day that cut a solid left-handed Collegian in half.

Mayur was not to be denied a bag and stunning Scorpions return, trapping the lefty in front, then added a 6th for good measure, nicking off the 10th to Sid whom had joined in the fun at gully.

2nd innings

Indra and Benny were gifted some loose deliveries by Shahzad and Barclay to be 49-0 and cantering toward victory until Benny missed a Jono slow dipper to be bowled.

Jonny was nicked off for a second game in a row by Akif. Indra tonked Jono to mid off then Sid was Akif’s second victim bowled to offer Collegians 3rds some hope at a first victory of the season.

Shades of the Stokes Valley 1st round meltdown were triggered. But Kaushik was not at Delaney Park that day and took about heaping pressure back on Collegians - ably assisted by Abdul. Together seeing off the speedster Akif and mercurial Jono to get the Scorpions within sight of the finishing line.

Appropriately, the top-scoring Collegians wides column gifted the final run, allowing Scorpions a scrappy 4 wicket bonus point win.

Next week will be a grand clash with our underachieving Easts colleagues, but are an outfit to be taken seriously. Which we most definitely will.
