The range of bacteria cultured so far this season is fairly typical for spring environmental challenge. The elevated "other/mixed bacteria" category suggests more care could be taken in the collection of samples.
A huge 91% of Strep uberis and 80% of Staph aureus samples are highly sensitive to penicillin! Mastatest technology has allowed our farmers to identify those cows that require an alternative treatment on an individual basis and therefore increase cure rates by using the correct antibiotic for each infection!
If you would like to know more about how useful a mastatest machine could be for your farm then give us a call!

Spring Mastitis amongst Vet4Farm Mastatest users:
The peak of clinical mastitis has nearly passed and now is a great time to review what that picture looked like for Southland farms.
Of interest were the no bacteria detected cases – grey and the E.coli – yellow – both potential cases (providing the cow is well) that do not receive antibiotics, only NSAIDS to help with swelling and inflammation. Within our clinic that was a whopping 20% of potential cows left untreated!
We are about to head into herd test season and these same users will be able to culture their own HiSCC cows with the Mastatest system or you can bring those milk samples into the clinic for testing – call our clinic to book.
If you would like your own Mastatest lapbox in shed please call the clinic to discuss the suitability for your farm.

Well worth watching if you're farming in the South.
Due to the dry conditions we had here in Southland earlier this year and indications we could be heading the same way this summer, we have asked Georgina Griffiths from MetService New Zealand to update us with a long-range forecast for the next few months.
